Abstract

Objectives. The objective of this study was to evaluate the validity of the periodontal screening and recording (PSR) instrument and a new developed simplified periodontal screening and recording (S-PSR) instrument.

Methods. All the periodontal examinations were done by one trained examiner for making the diagnosis of periodontitis. Periodontitis was defined as clinical periodontal attachment loss of 4.0 mm and over on 1 or more sites, or 2 or more sites not on the same tooth. The overall percent agreement, sensitivity, specificity, Cohen¡¯s kappa statistic and the likelihood ratio were calculated for evaluating the validity of the PSR and the S-PSR (S-PSR, S-PSRM, S-PSRL, S-PSRR) by comparing these with the results of all the periodontal examinations.

Results. This study revealed that the validity of the PSR, S-PSR, and S-PSRM were higher than the S-PSRR and S-PSRL when periodontitis was defined as periodontal attachment loss of 4.0 mm and over on 1 or more sites. When the periodontitis was defined as periodontal attachment loss of 4.0 mm and over on 2 or more sites, the likelihood ratio for a positive result of the PSR and S-PSR were lowest among the screening tools and the likelihood ratios for negative results of the PSR, S-PSR, and S-PSRM were lower than those the S-PSRR and S-PSRL.

Conclusions. The S-PSRM may be a valuable tool for screening the periodontal condition during general dental check-ups or a national oral health screening program.
